{"id":80921,"date":"2019-07-23T10:17:11","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T08:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=80921"},"modified":"2019-07-23T10:17:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-23T08:17:11","slug":"court-reserves-mec-ruling-to-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/07\/23\/court-reserves-mec-ruling-to-thursday\/","title":{"rendered":"Court reserves \u2018Mec\u2019 ruling to Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Faith Kadzanja:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Constitutional Court sitting in Lilongwe has reserved its ruling to Thursday on whether to give Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) more time to file and serve sworn statements pertaining to the May 21 Tripartite Elections case.<\/p>\n<p>Mec asked for the extension of the days following disruption of an exercise involving its lawyers who wanted to collect evidence from some polling officers.<\/p>\n<p>In Kasungu District, Mec lawyers failed to continue with the exercise as some people were not in agreement with what they were doing.<\/p>\n<p>Issues of timeframe and whether the application might have an impact on the commencement of the case on July 29 2019, also arose in the court.<\/p>\n<p>But the judges said if, by any chance, the July 29 date was affected then the case would commence any day after July 29.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyer representing UTM, George Mwale, said they would wait to hear the court\u2019s ruling on the application on the given date.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe ruling has been reserved for Thursday. The court has also given Malawi Institute of Journalism (Mij) Radio permission to cover the proceedings live just like Zodiak and Times radios were granted an okay to cover live the court proceedings,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>High Court judges\u2014 Healy Potani, Mike Tembo, Dingiswayo Madise, Ivy Kamanga and Redson Kapindu\u2014 are hearing the case.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi Congress Party and UTM filed petitions at the court seeking nullification of elections results arguing that they were marred by irregularities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Faith Kadzanja: The Constitutional Court sitting in Lilongwe has reserved its ruling to Thursday on whether to give Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) more time to file and serve sworn statements pertaining to the May 21 Tripartite Elections case.
