{"id":80807,"date":"2019-07-20T02:02:01","date_gmt":"2019-07-20T00:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=80807"},"modified":"2019-07-20T02:02:01","modified_gmt":"2019-07-20T00:02:01","slug":"queens-in-5th-place-play-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/07\/20\/queens-in-5th-place-play-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Queens in 5th place play-off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>Mphatso Malidadi:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/whyte-mulilima.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64129 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/whyte-mulilima-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/whyte-mulilima-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/whyte-mulilima-768x342.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/whyte-mulilima.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Malawi national netball team produced a breathtaking performance to humble Uganda 55-44 at the on-going Vitality Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Queens have set up a position five play-off against Jamaica who earlier defeated Zimbabwe 77-47.<\/p>\n<p>It was an emotional game for Malawi who, prior to the match, suffered three successive defeats to Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Uganda defeated the Queens 66-43 before enjoying double success with a 51-46 win.<\/p>\n<p>The East Africans continued their dominance over Malawi with a 54-52 victory at the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi made a single change to the team that started in the win over Zimbabwe by bringing in wing attacker Thandie Galeta for\u00a0Bridget Kumwenda-Chalera.<\/p>\n<p>The Queens started slowly but were confident to boss play and finish the first quarter leading 12-9.<\/p>\n<p>Centre Takondwa Lwazi- Mtonga was outstanding as she supplied game-changing passes to chief tormentor Joyce Mvula and goal attacker Jane Chimaliro.<\/p>\n<p>In defence, goalkeeper Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda, goal-defender Caroline Mtukule- Ngwira and wing defender Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango were resolute to deny Uganda, led by highly rated Peace Proscovia. Malawi led 27-19 at half time.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the third quarter, the She-Cranes introduced gangling shooter Mary Cholhok to partner Proscovia in attack.<\/p>\n<p>This gave Malawi defenders problems as they battled to contain two towering shooters.<\/p>\n<p>It was a thrilling quarter which swung from one end to the other as both teams fought to finish on top.<\/p>\n<p>Realising danger, Malawi substituted Mtukule-Ngwira for Lauren Ngwira to add steel and height to the defence.<\/p>\n<p>The She-Cranes managed to reduce the margin in a 41-35 lead for the Queens.<\/p>\n<p>The last quarter saw Uganda substituting Proscovia to give Malawi the upper hand as Mvula underlined her class.<\/p>\n<p>The Manchester Thunder shooter inspired the Queens to a resounding win and was deservedly named Player-of-the- Match.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi assistant Coach, Whyte Mulilima, hailed the players for a job-well-done.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis is what God has done for us. The players had a grand game and deserved the win. It feels great to be back in the top six,\u201d<\/em> Mulilima said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, it is not automatic that Malawi would join the top six on world rankings as International Netball Federation will have to make assessments after the global event.<\/p>\n<p>But Malawi could rise on the rankings after beating Uganda and Northern Ireland who are sixth and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mphatso Malidadi: Malawi national netball team produced a breathtaking performance to humble Uganda 55-44 at the on-going Vitality Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, Friday.
