{"id":80599,"date":"2019-07-16T10:34:16","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T08:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=80599"},"modified":"2019-07-16T10:34:16","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T08:34:16","slug":"road-accidents-claim-111-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/07\/16\/road-accidents-claim-111-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Road accidents claim 111 lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Yohane Symon:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75370\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75370\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/road-accident.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75370 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/road-accident-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/road-accident-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/road-accident.jpg 334w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SAD ENDING\u2014The accident<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At least 111 people have died in road accidents in the past six months in eastern region districts of Mangochi, Machinga, Balaka and Zomba, police have confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the region registered 393 cases of road accidents between January and June 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The figure represents an increase compared to 117 accidents which occurred during a similar period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the total number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/16-die-in-easter-road-accidents\/\">accidents<\/a> for this year, 98 resulted in the death of 111 people.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 58 people died in 57 accidents.<\/p>\n<p>Mangochi tops the list.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the road users we interviewed blamed traffic officers for failing to enforce traffic regulations among motorists.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cApart from the fact that road users are also partly to blame, traffic police officers should be blamed for failing to enforce regulations on the roads.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMinibuses continue to exceed their capacity under the watch of the police. If police can be strict enough, cases of accidents could be reduced,\u201d<\/em> said Roderick Njanje, a motorist from Mangochi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Regional Traffic Officer, Stain Mumba, said most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/9-die-in-machinga-road-accident\/\">accidents<\/a> occur due to careless driving.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe have also noted that there is an increase in vehicles on our roads. Some of these vehicles are not roadworthy.
