{"id":79679,"date":"2019-06-27T03:43:04","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T01:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=79679"},"modified":"2019-06-27T03:43:04","modified_gmt":"2019-06-27T01:43:04","slug":"kwathu-to-fundraise-for-evans-mbewe-to-welcome-winiko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/06\/27\/kwathu-to-fundraise-for-evans-mbewe-to-welcome-winiko\/","title":{"rendered":"Kwathu to fundraise for Evans Mbewe, to welcome Winiko"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Sam Banda Jnr:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79684\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79684\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mbewe-jakobo-chikoja.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79684\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mbewe-jakobo-chikoja-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mbewe-jakobo-chikoja-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mbewe-jakobo-chikoja.jpg 653w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79684\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IN NEED OF HELP\u2014Mbewe (centre), Mabedi (right) and Chikoja<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kwathu Drama Group is set to hold shows next month, which will be part of celebrating the country\u2019s Independence Day and raising funds for one of its oldest members Evans Mbewe, who is ill.<\/p>\n<p>Mbewe has not been on stage with the popular vernacular drama group for some time due to illness and is at his home, Molere, in Thyolo.<\/p>\n<p>Kwathu Director, Eric Mabedi, confirmed Wednesday they have put up some fundraising shows with the aim of assisting their colleague.<\/p>\n<p>Better known as Che Jali in the theatre world, Mbewe has been instrumental in enriching Kwathu\u2019s productions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cEvery year, during Independence Day celebrations, Kwathu Drama Group joins Malawians in these celebrations by organising drama shows in different parts of the country and we will use these shows to raise funds to support Evans Mbewe,\u201d<\/em> Mabedi said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The shows start on July 6 at Rivonia Lodge in Phalombe and then Blantyre Cultural Centre on July 7.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cApart from celebrating Independence Day, we will also welcome Bon Kalindo back on stage after missing for a year due to his involvement in politics,\u201d<\/em> Mabedi said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said Winiko\u2019s year-long absence affected some of their productions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe missed him and we are happy to have him back.,\u201d<\/em> Mabedi said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The veteran actor, who is also National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) President, said he visited Mbewe with Ntam Board Member Timothy Chikoja.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cEvance Mbewe is diabetic and has stroke on his left arm and leg. Plans are underway to bring him to Kachere Rehabilitation Centre in Blantyre for treatment,\u201d<\/em> Mabedi said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mbewe\u2019s cousin Sam Tanaka hailed Mabedi and team for visiting Mbewe.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cHe needs to go to the hospital for treatment and there is that proposal. If he is able to walk with clutches, his condition could improve.
