At Bullets, we have been using dominant red for home games and white, with partially red stripes, for away games. We use red for home matches as it symbolises that we have to fight and we use white for away matches because it means we want peace,” he said.

Another former Bullets GS, Harold Fote, said it was a debatable issue even though there was an element of breach of trust.

“I don’t have a problem with Bullets using a different uniform for marketing purposes as, elsewhere, such things occur. During our time, we faced a similar situation when a Japanese firm wanted us to change colours in exchange with sponsorship but the board [of trustees] trashed the issue. Commenting on the present issue, I think it is a breach of trust and some of us foresaw this happening,” he said.

Bullets Supporters Committee GS, Mabvuto Chibambo, said they had reserved their position on the issue as they wait for the official position from management.

“But, personally, I think this is because of the commercialisation project which we started. The team has been using the jersey as a training kit; so maybe, management is trying to attract partners to help easily run the club,” he said.

Bullets Chief Administration Officer, Albert Chigoga, said the club had no intention to change its traditional colours.

“Use of different colours from the usual is in keeping with modern practice globally in which clubs have options to use completely different colours when playing away from home; hence; the uniform used in the game against Mzuni is an away kit and has nothing to do with club’s intention to change the traditional colours. We will also be using red and white kit in other away games,” he said.

Bullets’ rivals Be Forward Wanderers were the first to deviate from their traditional blue and white colours to accommodate their sponsor, Japan’s Be Forward Limited’s orange.

Harsh Biyani writes on India’s top football website Sportkeeda that a jersey’s main significance is to avoid confusion in the game.

“The home kit is a team’s main kit which also represents the heritage of the club i.e its colours.
