{"id":79485,"date":"2019-06-22T11:16:04","date_gmt":"2019-06-22T09:16:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=79485"},"modified":"2019-06-22T11:16:04","modified_gmt":"2019-06-22T09:16:04","slug":"malawian-heads-world-bank-liberia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/06\/22\/malawian-heads-world-bank-liberia\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawian heads World Bank Liberia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>Chimwemwe Mangazi:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79486\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79486\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/khwima-nthara.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79486\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/khwima-nthara-300x272.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/khwima-nthara-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/khwima-nthara.jpg 403w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SOARING\u2014 Nthara<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Former University of Malawi lecturer, Khwima Nthara, has been appointed as country manager for Liberia, a development which Economics Association of Malawi (Ecama) has lauded.<\/p>\n<p>Nthara has succeeded Larisa Leshchenko, whose tenure expires on July 31 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Nthara joined the bank in 2005, working as an economist in the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Department, but currently serves as economic adviser in the World Bank Operations Policy and Country Services vice presidency in Washington D.C., the United States.<\/p>\n<p>He has served the bank in a number of positions in Africa, East Asia and Pacific regions, including as programme leader in Nigeria and senior country economist for Nigeria, Myanmar and Malawi, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the World Bank, he worked as economics lecturer in the University of Malawi, Country Manager for the Malawi Trade and Poverty Programme, and Country Manager for Deloitte\u2019s Development Consulting Practice.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ecama has congratulated the Malawian.<\/p>\n<p>In a congratulatory message, the association\u2019s executive director, Maleka Thula, said local economists see the development as an encouragement to budding economists in the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSeeing him rising through the ranks at the World Bank not only shows his acumen but also his hard work to deliver at the highest level. It is also interesting because this shows that we, as a country, are not short of top class economic expertise that can help in shaping economic policies of our country.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNthara is a model for most young economists in the country.
