{"id":79206,"date":"2019-06-17T03:14:13","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T01:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=79206"},"modified":"2019-06-17T03:14:13","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T01:14:13","slug":"employ-more-mental-health-experts-government-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/06\/17\/employ-more-mental-health-experts-government-told\/","title":{"rendered":"Employ more mental health experts, government told"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Samuel Kalimira:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Officials at St John of God College of Health Sciences have called on the government to recruit students who have studied mental health at the facility.<\/p>\n<p>The call comes in the wake of reports that poor mental health is one of the leading causes of suicide among Malawians.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Mzuzu on Friday during the graduation ceremony of 20 clinical officers who were studying mental health and 71 nurses, St John of God Chief Executive Officer, Charles Masulani, said Malawi\u2019s public health service vacancy rate stands at 60 percent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is, therefore, important that the government should start recruiting more health workers to improve service delivery. Research we conducted some few years ago indicated that our graduates are performing wonders out there. This means our institution is contributing to efforts aimed at lowering the vacancy rate in the health sector in Malawi said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMzuzu University Deputy Vice Chancellor, Fred Msiska, who was the guest of honour, called on the government to invest more in the health sector.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Msiska said a robust public health sector was critical to national development.<\/p>\n<p>The students graduated in programmes such as psychosocial counselling, nursing, mental health and clinical medicine.<\/p>\n<p>St John of God College of Health Science was established in 2003 and it has graduated over 500 students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Kalimira: Officials at St John of God College of Health Sciences have called on the government to recruit students who have studied mental health at the facility.
