{"id":79100,"date":"2019-06-13T10:39:53","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T08:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=79100"},"modified":"2019-06-13T10:39:53","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T08:39:53","slug":"fam-exco-meets-over-coach-under-17-tourney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/06\/13\/fam-exco-meets-over-coach-under-17-tourney\/","title":{"rendered":"Fam exco meets over coach, Under-17 tourney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Mabvuto Kambuwe: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79101\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79101\" style=\"width: 292px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/under-17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79101\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/under-17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/under-17.jpg 292w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/under-17-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TO PLAY AT HOME\u2014Under-17 players<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Executive Committee meeting slated for this Saturday in Blantyre is expected to discuss preparations for hosting the Under-17 Cosafa Cup and progress on the recruitment of the Flames\u2019 new coach.<\/p>\n<p>Council of Southern Africa Football Associations gave Malawi <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/cosafa-announces-under-17-tourney-dates\/\">the right<\/a> to host the junior championship from September 26 to October 5 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Fam is also expected to appoint a permanent coach after it decided against renewing Ronny van Geneugden\u2019s contract beyond March 31 2019 due to poor performance.<\/p>\n<p>Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, confirmed that the meeting would take place this weekend.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIndeed, the Executive Committee will also discuss the progress of preparations for hosting Cosafa Cup because time is fast-approaching. Performance of the Flames will also be part of the discussions,\u201d<\/em> Gunda said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some 55 coaches have applied for the Flames job.<\/p>\n<p>The Flames performed beyond expectations under interim coach Meke Mwase after reaching the Cosafa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/flames-finish-cosafa-tourney-with-plate-final-loss\/\">Plate final<\/a> but lost 5-4 to South Africa on post-match penalties.<\/p>\n<p>The committee will also discuss the budget for Fam\u2019s activities this year.<\/p>\n<p>The association is also expected to meet officials from Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development and Malawi National Council of Sports to discuss preparations for hosting Cosafa Cup and appointment of the new coach.<\/p>\n<p>Fam is supposed to get a written guarantee from the government to send to Cosafa secretariat in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Mauritius hosted the previous two editions in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, Malawi won bronze.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi last hosted the regional youth championship in 2001 and won gold after beating South Africa 4-1.<\/p>\n<p>By hosting the tournament, Fam will be responsible for production of entry tickets and all proceeds will go towards the association.<\/p>\n<p>Cosafa will be responsible for accommodation of all teams\u2014which is the biggest expense, as well as local transport for all teams and officials.
