Vice-President Saulos Chilima and the Civil Servants Trade Union (CSTU) have described as a big blow the death of deputy Chief Secretary to Government, Willie Samute.<\/p>\n
Samute died Thursday morning at a hospital in South Africa.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued yesterday, the Vice-President extended deepest condolences to family members, civil servants and the people of Malawi on the passing on Samute.<\/p>\n
Chilima, who said he sent his condolences on behalf of his colleagues in the Public Service Reform Commission, described Samute as a professional and career civil servant.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe late Samute rose from humble beginnings to become one of Malawi\u2019s most accomplished and dedicated civil servants, earning himself esteem from fellow civil servants and Malawians across the country,\u201d said Chilima.<\/p>\n
He further said Samute was a symbol of selfless humanity whose humility and dedication to public service served as an inspiration to many.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis significant contribution to the ongoing public sector reforms will always be valued and remembered,\u201d Chilima said.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, CSTU Secretary General, Madalitso Njolomole, said Samute played a crucial role in negotiations that have been taking place between the union and government on the welfare of all civil servants.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a big blow to CSTU and the civil service as a whole. He changed the landscape of negotiations between CSTU and government. He greatly championed the welfare of civil servants when he was chairperson of Government Negotiating Team. He was always humble, humane and empathetic.
