{"id":78703,"date":"2019-06-04T03:28:29","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T01:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=78703"},"modified":"2019-06-04T03:28:29","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T01:28:29","slug":"britain-celebrates-european-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/06\/04\/britain-celebrates-european-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain celebrates European success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Mabvuto Kambuwe:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A cross section of Malawians joined Britain in celebrating the success of English teams in European competitions on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Patrons were given a rare treat at the British High Commissioner\u2019s residence in Lilongwe, where they watched the all-England Uefa Champions League <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-soccer-champions-tot-liv-report\/salah-origi-goals-bring-liverpool-champions-league-redemption-idUSKCN1T23GX\">final<\/a> between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs on big screens.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool won the continental title after beating Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid, Spain.<\/p>\n<p>English teams also met in the Europa League final which saw Chelsea emerging champions after thrashing Arsenal 4-1 in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>British acting High Commissioner to Malawi, Gary Leslie, said it was pleasing that English teams defied the odds to qualify for the finals of the two European club competitions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe organised the event to showcase the success of English football. The English Premier League is a global brand because people all over the world support it. Even in Malawi, people spend a lot of money on flying to the United Kingdom to watch their favourite teams,\u201d<\/em> Leslie said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>People, including diplomats and Football Association of Malawi Vice President James Mwenda graced the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>National Youth Football Association Chairperson, Chimango Munthali, was also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>Mwenda said the performance of English teams had greatly improved in the 2018\/19 season.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is a big achievement that teams from England have won the two European club competitions.
