{"id":78458,"date":"2019-05-28T10:35:48","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T08:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=78458"},"modified":"2019-05-28T10:35:48","modified_gmt":"2019-05-28T08:35:48","slug":"escom-sets-ambitious-power-generation-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/05\/28\/escom-sets-ambitious-power-generation-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Escom sets ambitious power generation plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By William Kumwembe: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/collins-magalasi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-69696\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/collins-magalasi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/collins-magalasi.jpg 499w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/collins-magalasi-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/collins-magalasi-278x202.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/a>Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has set an ambitious plan of increasing national electrification rate to 30 percent of the country\u2019s population in the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>In Malawi, where, reportedly, less than 12 percent of the population has access to electricity, the lack of reliable power supply is a major constraint to business and economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Malawian firms consistently cite weakness in the electricity sector as one of the major obstacles to doing business.<\/p>\n<p>When power cuts out, big firms must either shut down or increase the cost of production by using fuel generators.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi\u2019s situation is not unique. In sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 600 million people \u2014 two-thirds of the population \u2014 live without electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Inadequate, unreliable and unequal access to power drive up the cost of business, hinders investment and limits job opportunities, particularly for the poor.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity demand hovers between 360MW and 460MW while supply has been hovering around 360MW.<\/p>\n<p>But speaking in an interview last week, Escom Chief Executive Officer, Alexon Chiwaya, said the electricity supplier was working with stakeholders, including independent power producers (IPPs), towards increasing generation capacity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe are focusing on the supply side. We are among the least electrified in the region, close to 20 percent only have access to electricity in the country and we would like to grow to 30 percent within the next 10 years or so but the focus now should be on the supply side,\u201d<\/em> Chiwaya said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hydro-power remains Malawi\u2019s major source of electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Chiwaya said, to attain the target, Malawi, needed to diversify from heavy reliance on hydro power generation and \u201cexploit the whole energy mix\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) Chief Executive Officer, Collins Magalasi, said they were banking on the IPPs<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIn the medium term, what we foresee is a total stop of black outs,\u201d<\/em> Magalasi said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last week, Mera challenged the IPPs to roll their operations within the agreed time frame and further warned to revoke their licences if they fail to roll out.<\/p>\n<p>To date, 20 power purchase agreements have been signed between Escom and IPPs in the areas of hydro, solar, wind and diesel power generation.<\/p>\n<p>The electricity generated would fit into the national power grid through infrastructure built under the $350.7 million (about K257 billion) energy compact from the Millennium Challenge Corporation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By William Kumwembe: Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has set an ambitious plan of increasing national electrification rate to 30 percent of the country\u2019s population in the next 10 years.
