{"id":78392,"date":"2019-05-27T03:10:46","date_gmt":"2019-05-27T01:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=78392"},"modified":"2019-05-27T03:10:46","modified_gmt":"2019-05-27T01:10:46","slug":"resolve-election-related-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/05\/27\/resolve-election-related-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Resolve election-related cases\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/may-21-elections.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-78394\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/may-21-elections.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"64\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>By Faith Kadzanja: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has asked the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) to address concerns related to Tuesday\u2019s tripartite elections before announcing the winner of the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference held in Lilongwe Sunday, HRDC National Vice Chairperson, Gift Trapence, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/rigging-claims-mar-elections-in-nsanje\/\">irregularities<\/a> that marred the election management system risk compromising credibility of the polls.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOur concerns, as human rights defenders, is not on who wins these elections; rather, on how any of the candidates wins the elections. We want whoever wins to be a true reflection of the will of the electorate. We want Mec to address all the 147 cases in a transparent and accountable manner,\u201d<\/em> Trapence said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trapence also said the use of Tipp-ex in the results sheets was questionable, even though Mec\u2019s auditors allowed such documents.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cMec should tell Malawians which standard auditing procedures they are following because, in international audit standards, Tipp-exed documents are not authentic and are immediately disallowed,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In another development, the Malawi Human Rights Commission has said it is disturbed with reported incidences of election-related violence in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>This is contained in a statement which the commission released on Sunday, signed by executive secretary David Nungu.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is alleged that MCP [Malawi Congress Party] supporters perpetrated violence against supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party in the two areas. The commission wishes to condemn such violence in strongest terms,\u201d<\/em> the statement reads.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mec Chairperson, Jane Ansah, said Saturday evening before declaring winners of the parliamentary election that cases of irregularities had been ironed out.<\/p>\n<p>And, Sunday, during the afternoon media update, Ansah reiterated Mec\u2019s commitment to resolving outstanding issues, saying Mec continued to receive complaints and find solutions to them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe commission will not leave any gray areas,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; By Faith Kadzanja: Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has asked the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) to address concerns related to Tuesday\u2019s tripartite elections before announcing the winner of the presidential election.
