One critical part of this development work is infrastructure; so, without pitches, stadiums, technical centres or headquarters, it is not possible to run football around the world. So, significant funds from Fifa are going to the national associations for them to construct football infrastructure.

“The objective of this workshop is to support our associations on how best to use these funds to do infrastructure development. Malawi has just finished upgrading the technical centre which was founded using Fifa Forward Funds. So, we felt it was a great case-study to show other countries how these funds can be used. We have invited about 15 countries to see what Malawi has done with the funds,” he said.

Football Association of Malawi President, Walter Nyamilandu, said the workshop was important for Malawi because it shows where Fifa places the country in infrastructure development.

“For Fifa to grant us this opportunity signifies that we have done a commendable job in infrastructure development. We had a solid plan in as far as infrastructure development is concerned. We didn’t spread all our infrastructure and scatter it across the country. We tried and consolidated it in one area in Chiwembe. It was easier to see progress. The other factor is that we had support from the Malawi government because when we wanted [pieces of] land, we were able to get them,” he said.

By Mphatso Malidadi: Fifa envoy Daniel Krebs has said Malawi was selected to host infrastructure development workshop following its good work at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Blantyre.
