{"id":77982,"date":"2019-05-15T03:31:28","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T01:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=77982"},"modified":"2019-05-15T03:31:28","modified_gmt":"2019-05-15T01:31:28","slug":"leaders-urged-to-emulate-kamuzu-banda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/05\/15\/leaders-urged-to-emulate-kamuzu-banda\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaders urged to emulate Kamuzu Banda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Macdonald Thom:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ken-kandodo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-77987\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ken-kandodo-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ken-kandodo-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ken-kandodo.jpg 634w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Former general secretary of Nkhoma Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), Reverend Davidson Chifungo, has appealed to the country\u2019s leaders to emulate leadership traits which Malawi\u2019s founding president Hastings Kamuzu Banda portrayed.<\/p>\n<p>In his sermon during Kamuzu Day commemoration prayers held in Kasungu Tuesday, Chifungo said Banda had the welfare of people at heart.<\/p>\n<p>The prayers were conducted under the theme \u2018Traits of a Transformational Leader\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Chifungo said a leader should be visionary, have pure motives, be humble and selfless.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cLeaders have to be visionary, even at family level. When Kamuzu was coming to Malawi, he had a vision: To \u2018break the stupid federation [of Rhodesia and Nyasaland]\u2019. After doing that, he said people should have clothes, food and live in houses that do not leak,\u201d<\/em> Chifungo said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nkhoma Synod Moderator, Reverend Biswick Nkhoma, said it was sad that people were not attending activities organised in honour of Kamuzu.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is sad that very few people come to this event. This ought to be a national function,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nkhoma also said it was sad that Malawi was failing to develop.<\/p>\n<p>In a clear reference to threats that have come as a result of the synod\u2019s recent pastoral letter, Nkhoma said they would continue speaking whenever things go wrong in Malawi.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cNkhoma Synod is not a political party. We shall remain a church of God. We do not speak for any political party. We are the voice of the voiceless and we shall continue no matter what. Don\u2019t fight men of God. A nation that sheds human blood does not prosper at all,\u201d<\/em> Nkhoma said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the May 21 Tripartite Elections, Nkhoma said voters should be guided by the pastoral letter to vote for a leader <em>\u201cof good reputation, full of the holy spirit\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chakwera-khumbo-kachali.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-77988\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chakwera-khumbo-kachali-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chakwera-khumbo-kachali-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chakwera-khumbo-kachali-768x342.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/chakwera-khumbo-kachali.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Malawi Congress Party president, Lazarus Chakwera, said the country needed healing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cKamuzu apologised to Malawians even for the things he was unaware of. But, as a leader, he took that responsibility. This country needs healing because in every government, things that Malawians did not like happened. We need a new beginning; a new chapter in our lives,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A representative of the Kamuzu family, Ken Kandodo, who is also former minister of Finance, thanked people for being with them always.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis year marks 22 years since Kamuzu passed away. All this time, we have been holding special prayers. We are very thankful to you for always being with us. We are all aware of what Kamuzu did. But sometimes politicians want to portray a picture that Kamuzu did nothing. This is disappointing.
