{"id":77843,"date":"2019-05-11T05:46:47","date_gmt":"2019-05-11T03:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=77843"},"modified":"2019-05-11T05:46:47","modified_gmt":"2019-05-11T03:46:47","slug":"sports-welfare-fund-policy-in-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/05\/11\/sports-welfare-fund-policy-in-pipeline\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports Welfare Fund policy in pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>Tione Andsen, Mana:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development has said it is in the process of drafting a Sports Welfare Fund policy for the country.<\/p>\n<p>Director of Sports in the ministry, Jameson Ndalama, said the policy would help address issues surrounding the welfare of players and officials.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe welfare of our players and officials has not been addressed adequately, hence the need to come up with the policy so that we change things for the better.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are preparing a draft of the policy which will be circulated among various stakeholders before being presented to cabinet for further scrutiny and input. We are hoping that the policy will be approved very soon,\u201d<\/em> Ndalama said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said the welfare of the country\u2019s retired sports personalities needs to improve so that they live better lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe have not done well in this area and time has come for us to appreciate our retired sports personalities for what they did to the country. We have not done well in the past but we will do better this time,\u201d<\/em> Ndalama said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He called on various stakeholders to join hands with the government in ensuring that the draft policy encompasses relevant issues.<\/p>\n<p>Former long distance runner, Mzee Makawa, commended the government for the initiative, saying it was long overdue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe have not done well in looking after our retired sports stars and I believe this is a step in the right direction. Most former sports persons are living miserable lives as if they did not do anything for this country.
