Chilima<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Homeland Security Minister, Nicholas Dausi, has dragged State Vice-President Saulos Chilima to court over remarks<\/a> he made in Chitipa recently alleging that the Cabinet minister played a role in the torching of Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) warehouse in Lilongwe in 2014.<\/p>\n

According to a court document which The Daily Times <\/em>has seen, Dausi wants damages for defamation and that the UTM presidential candidate should pay costs of the action.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe command you that within 28 days after the service of this summons on you, inclusive the day of service, you must either satisfy the claim or file with this court a defence and list of documents,\u201d<\/em> the summons read.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you do not intend to contest the proceedings, you must within 14 days after the service of this summons on you, inclusive the day of the service, return accompanying response stating therein that you do not intend to contest the proceedings but desire a stay of the enforcement of the judgement, if any.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the summons, dated May 8 2019, Chilima made the remarks on or about April 30 2019, while addressing political rallies in whistle-stop tours in Chitipa and Rumphi districts.<\/p>\n

The document says the remarks were defamatory.<\/p>\n

It further says the said words meant and were understood that Dausi is of questionable character, dishonest, unfit to hold public office, untrustworthy and a mafia-like character.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe said words were uttered maliciously in order for the defendant to gain political mileage during the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections. In the consequence, the claimant\u2019s reputation has been gravely and seriously injured and has suffered great distress and embarrassment,\u201d<\/em> the summons, filed at the High Court, Lilongwe Registry, reads.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

UTM publicity secretary Joseph Chidanti-Malunga and secretary general Patricia Kaliati could not be reached for a comment as we went to press.<\/p>\n

UTM legal affairs director, Yasin Maoni, said he could not comment on the issue as he had not seen the court document.<\/p>\n

The court document has transcribed Chilima\u2019s remarks as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cTell the DPP [leaders] to go and give back the cameras they have stolen because they are the same people, led by Dausi, who torched Mec warehouse in 2014. They are free to go and complain anywhere. I am available. They are thieves; they have stolen cameras and they should give them back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Chilima, after addressing a political rally in Mangochi, reserved his comment when Times asked him to clarify his remarks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
