{"id":77636,"date":"2019-05-06T09:44:37","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T07:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=77636"},"modified":"2019-05-06T09:44:37","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T07:44:37","slug":"ilo-pushes-for-workers-compensation-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/05\/06\/ilo-pushes-for-workers-compensation-law\/","title":{"rendered":"ILO pushes for workers\u2019 compensation law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Chimwemwe Mangazi:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77640\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77640\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/andre-filipe-bongestabs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-77640\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/andre-filipe-bongestabs-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/andre-filipe-bongestabs-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/andre-filipe-bongestabs.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BONGESTABS\u2014We see some development<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The International Labor Organisation (ILO) has called for intensified efforts in enforcing provisions of the Workers Compensation Act in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation is also advocating bridging of the knowledge gap on working conditions between employers and workers to safeguard the welfare of the latter.<\/p>\n<p>This came out during a business breakfast that the Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) hosted in Lilongwe over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Ecam engaged its members and stakeholders on how to improve the employer-employee relationship and enlighten them on its plans.<\/p>\n<p>ILO Social Protection Technical Officer, Andre Felipe Bongestabs, said there is a misunderstanding on how to implement the right standards on working conditions between employers and employees in most institutions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe see some important developments happening such as development of regulations to improve the workers compensation Act which will improve the protection of workers in cases of work related accidents and diseases.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis also protects the employers because under the new regulations an insurance company pays the claims unlike in the past when it was taken care of by the company itself,\u201d<\/em> Bongestabs said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ecam president, George Matipwiri, said the association is lobbying the government to intensify efforts of safeguarding the welfare of employees.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cYou remember issues of pension, some companies have been struggling to remit funds to the managers and we are encouraging our members to follow the law.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere are issues of seasonal work which need to be defined properly and this is the time we want to lobby government and other partners to make sure that we have these things in place,\u201d<\/em> Matipwiri said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Chimwemwe Mangazi: The International Labor Organisation (ILO) has called for intensified efforts in enforcing provisions of the Workers Compensation Act in the country.
