{"id":77566,"date":"2019-05-03T10:50:59","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T08:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=77566"},"modified":"2019-05-03T10:50:59","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T08:50:59","slug":"region-5-most-active-but-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/05\/03\/region-5-most-active-but-fails\/","title":{"rendered":"Region 5 most active but fails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>to win at big meets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>By Mabvuto Kambuwe:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77570\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/netball.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-77570\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/netball-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/netball-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/netball.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">YET TO WIN MEDALS AT BIG INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS\u2014 Region 5 athletes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Minister of Labour, Sports, Youth and Manpower Development, Grace Chiumia, has asked African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five member countries to do careful soul-searching to identify underlying factors for their poor performance in international competitions and come up with tangible solutions to improve athletes\u2019 performance.<\/p>\n<p>Chiumia made the remarks during the opening of AUSC\u2019s Executive Committee Meeting at Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe Thursday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI am reliably informed that our region is the most active of all the regions in Africa and I am proud of that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHowever, our activeness is not reflected in the performance of our athletes and teams at continental and international levels,\u201d<\/em> Chiumia said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chiumia said Malawi was playing her role in boosting athletes\u2019 performance by constructing sports facilities in all the 28 districts of the country using Local Development Fund.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe Government of Malawi is really striving to promote sports among its citizens. To achieve this, the government planned to develop infrastructure, a comprehensive Sports Development Programme focusing on grassroots and continuously work with AUSC secretariat and fellow member countries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe government also believes that promotion of sports in schools will ensure establishment of a solid base for talent identification and development, which will see sustainable improvement in the performance of our athletes and teams,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chiumia said Malawi was also working hard to prepare well for a successful hosting of the 2022 Region Five Games.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>AUSC Chairperson, Vetumbuavi Veii, urged member countries to invest more in activities.<em> &#8220;I also challenge Malawi to get ready to host the 2022 Region 5 Youth Games,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The meeting has attracted delegates from 10 countries namely Angola, South Africa, eSwatini, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia and hosts Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi will host the regional competition in the next three years for the first time.
