{"id":77255,"date":"2019-04-25T10:57:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-25T08:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=77255"},"modified":"2019-04-25T10:57:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-25T08:57:00","slug":"cyclone-kenneth-not-immediate-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/25\/cyclone-kenneth-not-immediate-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Cyclone Kenneth not immediate threat\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Jameson Chauluka:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services Director, Jolam Nkhokwe, has said Malawi is not under immediate danger of the looming Tropical Cyclone Kenneth.<\/p>\n<p>Nkhokwe commented on the cyclone through a statement which he released on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The statement says, by yesterday, the cyclone was expected to be located 1,108 kilometres east of Nkhata-Bay but by today the cyclone would be 794 kilometres off Nkhata Bay.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAs of now, at its current position, Tropical Cyclone Kenneth does not have direct effect on the weather over Malawi,\u201d the statement reads in part.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHowever, as the cyclone approaches Malawi, it may enhance rainfall activities over the country particularly along the lakeshore areas.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The department says it will continue monitoring the movement of the cyclone.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rains, which caused landslides in Rumphi, claimed three lives, five are missing, many have been injured and property has been damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, heavy downpour and floods killed 60 people, injured 574 and affected over 800,000 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jameson Chauluka: Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services Director, Jolam Nkhokwe, has said Malawi is not under immediate danger of the looming Tropical Cyclone Kenneth.
