{"id":77156,"date":"2019-04-23T04:32:21","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T02:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=77156"},"modified":"2019-04-23T04:32:21","modified_gmt":"2019-04-23T02:32:21","slug":"india-to-boost-malawi-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/23\/india-to-boost-malawi-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"India to boost Malawi agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Taonga Sabola: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68400\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68400\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/grey-nyandule-phiri.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/grey-nyandule-phiri-300x258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/grey-nyandule-phiri-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/grey-nyandule-phiri.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grey Nyandule Phiri<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The government of India has unveiled plans to establish the India-Africa Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (IAIARD) in Malawi to enhance capacity in the areas of agro-financing and entrepreneurship development.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has, meanwhile, signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Consultancy Service (Nabcons) to set up the institute.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said in a statement the institute would be the first of its kind developed in an African country by India.<\/p>\n<p>It says the institute will further strengthen the bilateral relations with Malawi and India\u2019s relations with African Union.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIAIARD will be a pan-African Institute wherein trainees not only from Malawi but also from other African countries, will receive training to develop their human resources and build their capacity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIAIARD will develop training programmes in the areas of micro-financing and agro-financing, among others,\u201d<\/em> the statement reads.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Delhi notes that travel, logistics and training course expenses for students from other African countries will be borne by the Government of India for an initial period of three years.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Secretary for Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Grey Nyandule Phiri, Monday said the initiative was being handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Rejoice Shumba, was not immediately available for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The institute will come at a time Malawi\u2019s agriculture remains subdued due to, among other things, overreliance on rains coupled with poor development of irrigation infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Latest national accounts figures indicate that Malawi continues to rely on agriculture as the mainstay of the economy, contributing about 28 percent to the Gross Domestic Product.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Taonga Sabola: The government of India has unveiled plans to establish the India-Africa Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (IAIARD) in Malawi to enhance capacity in the areas of agro-financing and entrepreneurship development.
