{"id":77032,"date":"2019-04-19T10:43:58","date_gmt":"2019-04-19T08:43:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=77032"},"modified":"2019-04-19T10:43:58","modified_gmt":"2019-04-19T08:43:58","slug":"cotton-market-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/19\/cotton-market-opens\/","title":{"rendered":"Cotton market opens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Chimwemwe Mangazi: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s cotton markets opened Thursday, with the crop trading at minimum of K370 per kilogramme (kg).<\/p>\n<p>The markets are expected to run for 90 days.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing journalists in Lilongwe, Cotton Council of Malawi Executive Director, Cosmas Luwanda, said the council was upbeat that farmers would make the most of the commodity.<\/p>\n<p>Luwanda said the minimum price was arrived at following thorough consultations with stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>On the international market, cotton lint prices have declined from $0.88 per to $0.77 per kg.<\/p>\n<p>Estimates show that cotton production has increased this year to 24,000 metric tonnes as compared to 15,000 produced last year.<\/p>\n<p>Luwanda said the industry was anticipating that the country would produce over 40,000 metric tonnes but the crop was affected by heavy downpour in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cTo ensure proper enforcement of regulations, 197 marketing posts have been designated across the country at which seed cotton is going to be traded,\u201d<\/em> Luwanda said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cotton lint exports fetched K10 billion last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Chimwemwe Mangazi: The country\u2019s cotton markets opened Thursday, with the crop trading at minimum of K370 per kilogramme (kg).
