{"id":76853,"date":"2019-04-16T09:31:28","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T07:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=76853"},"modified":"2019-04-16T09:31:28","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T07:31:28","slug":"chimwemwe-mhango-resigns-as-mum-boss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/16\/chimwemwe-mhango-resigns-as-mum-boss\/","title":{"rendered":"Chimwemwe Mhango resigns as Mum boss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Sam Banda Jnr:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango has resigned as Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) President barely five months after taking over the mantle for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter dated April 14 2019 addressed to the Mum Board of Trustees, Mhango, who took over the leadership of the music body from Costen Mapemba when it was still an association before turning into a union, said his resignation was purely personal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI write with a heavy heart to tender my resignation as Mum President. The reasons are purely personal. I thank God for the opportunity that was given to me as a leader of the union,&#8221;<\/em> reads the letter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mhango Tuesday insisted he was not ready to speak on other issues.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cFor now I would say it\u2019s personal although there are some issues I will talk about letter,\u201d<\/em> Mhango said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Secretary of Mum Board of Trustees, Wellington Chatepa, said the board was disheartened by Mhango\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe reasons for Reverend Mhango\u2019s resignation are not yet expounded in his letter and he has simply cited personal grounds. We wish him well and thank him for the commendable job he has performed in developing the union thus far,\u201d<\/em> Chatepa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, Chatepa has said Gloria Manong\u2019a, who is currently the body\u2019s vice president, will take over the mantle in an acting capacity in accordance with the union\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Manong\u2019a could not be reached for her comment Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Since his election for the second term, Mum has been rocked in some trouble, some of it concerning misappropriation of funds, with some members alleging that Mhango and some members, who were part of the previous executive committee misappropriated funds.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThere is a lot which has been happening in the union since the new executive was ushered into office. Some new faces ,who are in the executive, have been sidelined for example the new treasurer general Cathy Kawawa. Handovers have not yet been done, there is just a lot and this is what has seen people pressuring Reverend Mhango.
