{"id":76818,"date":"2019-04-15T10:33:59","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T08:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=76818"},"modified":"2019-04-15T10:33:59","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T08:33:59","slug":"un-pledges-sustainable-floods-response-in-malawi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/15\/un-pledges-sustainable-floods-response-in-malawi\/","title":{"rendered":"UN pledges sustainable floods response in Malawi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Emmanuel Chirwa: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76822\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cooking-food.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76822\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cooking-food-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cooking-food-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cooking-food-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cooking-food.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NOT AVAILABLE AT ALL CAMPS\u2014 Food<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The United Nations (UN) has pledged continued assistance to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/government-bemoans-flood-victims-living-standards\/\">flood survivors<\/a> until their lives normalise.<\/p>\n<p>UNAids Executive Director and UN Under- Secretary General, Michel Sidibe, said this on Friday, after visiting Bangula Evacuation Camp in Nsanje District.<\/p>\n<p>It transpired, during the visit, that people who are staying at the camp lack basic necessities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe will try to help our friends affected by floods with items such as food but, much more, these people need support for them to return to their homes,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Camp manager, Isaac Falekeza, said the situation was dire.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe last time we received aid is eight days ago,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Health Minister Atupele Muluzi, who was part of the entourage, said the government was committed to addressing challenges which flood survivors are facing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe understand that our friends affected by floods are facing a lot of challenges, but let me assure them that the government together with development partners partners will do is best to address health-related and other challenges,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the day, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees donated blankets and mats while Care international donated food items to people at the camp.<\/p>\n<p>Bangula Camp has 5,000 people from Nsanje District and neighbouring Mozambique.<\/p>\n<p>The people are part of the 868,895 that have been affected by heavy rains which hit parts of the Central and Southern regions of the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Emmanuel Chirwa: The United Nations (UN) has pledged continued assistance to flood survivors until their lives normalise.
