{"id":76790,"date":"2019-04-15T03:07:02","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T01:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=76790"},"modified":"2019-04-15T03:07:02","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T01:07:02","slug":"menes-scoops-world-bank-award-in-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/15\/menes-scoops-world-bank-award-in-usa\/","title":{"rendered":"Menes scoops World Bank Award in USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Sam Banda Jnr: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76796\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76796\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/menes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76796\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/menes-300x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/menes-300x262.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/menes.jpg 418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ON CLOUD NINE \u2014Menes (left)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Artist and founder of Tumaini Festival, which is held at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/funding-hitches-hit-dzaleka-refugee-camp\/\">Dzaleka Refugee Camp<\/a> in Dowa District, over the weekend won the World Bank Social Inclusion Heroes Competition for sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Menes, who also managing Grittah\u2019s Camp in Lilongwe, received the award in United States of America.<\/p>\n<p>The award was presented during the annual World Bank\/ International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings held in Washington DC from April 6 to 14 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Menes said Sunday he was happy to have grabbed the award.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is so great that the impact of my work at Dzaleka Refugee Camp and Malawi is getting noticed by major institutions around the world,\u201d<\/em> Menes said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The artist, who created<a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/tumaini-sells-dzaleka\/\"> Tumaini Festival<\/a> to unearth talent from Dzaleka Refugee Camp, performed as a special guest at the Africa State of the Region event.<\/p>\n<p>The World Bank\u2019s Africa Region and its Social Development Unit launched the Social Inclusion Heroes Competition in 2017 to identify role models for African youth that illustrate an African spirit.<\/p>\n<p>The artist, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was highlighted by the World Bank as the founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/no-rest-for-tumaini-festival\/\">Tumaini Festival<\/a>, which has transformed the status of Dzaleka.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day free-of-charge festival last year attracted more than 30,000 participants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sam Banda Jnr: Artist and founder of Tumaini Festival, which is held at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District, over the weekend won the World Bank Social Inclusion Heroes Competition for sub-Saharan Africa.
