{"id":76593,"date":"2019-04-09T09:54:21","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T07:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=76593"},"modified":"2019-04-09T09:54:21","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T07:54:21","slug":"ncic-challenges-foreign-firms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/09\/ncic-challenges-foreign-firms\/","title":{"rendered":"NCIC challenges foreign firms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Mandy Pondani: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76597\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76597\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/linda-phiri.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76597\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/linda-phiri-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/linda-phiri-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/linda-phiri.jpg 498w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHIRI\u2014 We have regulations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) has faulted some foreign construction firms that are working in the country for not following regulations of the trade.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s spokesperson, Linda Phiri, raised the sentiments in an emailed interview in response to concerns over the poor standard of the newly commissioned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/government-to-redo-m5-road\/\">Karonga- Songwe Road<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The road in question has developed over 100 potholes, attracting the ire of community members.<\/p>\n<p>But Phiri said one of the contributing factors could be that most foreign contractors work in isolation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe have in place regulations that require foreign firms to operate in association with local firms through joint ventures, subcontracting and partnership in cases of consultancy services. This ensures [that] there is ownership as locals would be available to check the conduct of the foreign firms. Unfortunately some of them do not comply,\u201d<\/em> Phiri said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She, however, said the council promotes quality in its programmes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe NCIC advises all stakeholders to ensure that they do it [work] with due diligence when they are procuring services of foreign firms so that we don\u2019t fall into such traps.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe NCIC has also noted with concern that some foreign firms bring documentation in foreign languages which are not spoken or understood in Malawi, which complicates the monitoring system. As a result, the council is lobbying [stakeholders] to put [in place] regulations that require that all documentation should be translated into English,\u201d<\/em> Phiri said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She added that NCIC had instituted regulations that require registration of all projects to facilitate proper monitoring of construction projects.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, the Roads Authority, through its spokesperson Portia Kajanga, has vowed to continue overseeing both local and foreign contractors to ensure that their designs adhere to standards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mandy Pondani: The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) has faulted some foreign construction firms that are working in the country for not following regulations of the trade.
