{"id":76470,"date":"2019-04-05T03:37:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T01:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=76470"},"modified":"2019-04-05T03:37:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T01:37:00","slug":"bingu-statue-to-be-unveiled-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/04\/05\/bingu-statue-to-be-unveiled-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Bingu statue to be unveiled today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Rebecca Chimjeka:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/bingu-statue.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-76473\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/bingu-statue-248x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/bingu-statue-248x300.jpg 248w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/bingu-statue.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a>President Peter Mutharika is today expected to unveil a statue of former president, Bingu wa Mutharika, in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n<p>The statue has been erected within Parliament premises.<\/p>\n<p>A notice from Chief Secretary to the Government, Lloyd Muhara, released Thursday, says the function is expected to start at 10am.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cHis Excellency will preside over the commissioning of a statue of the late Ngwazi professor Bingu wa Mutharika, the former president of the Republic of Malawi, followed by a memorial service, at Parliament Buildings,\u201d<\/em> the statement reads.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The project to construct the statue is under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, which was also behind Kamuzu Statue as well as Kamuzu Mausoleum phase one projects.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Information Minister, Henry Mussa, said it was justifiable to mount the statue around Parliament precinct s , arguing it is a symbol of honour to Mutharika for the infrastructure development the country gained because of his decision to shift Malawi\u2019s diplomatic ties from Taiwan to People\u2019s Republic of China in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The government hired renowned South African sculptor Jean Doyle for the project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Rebecca Chimjeka: President Peter Mutharika is today expected to unveil a statue of former president, Bingu wa Mutharika, in Lilongwe.
