Police in Mzuzu are hunting for People\u2019s Party (PP) candidate for Chibanja Ward by-election Blackson Gondwe after the High Court in Mzuzu convicted him of registering fraudulently.<\/p>\n
Mzuzu Police deputy spokesperson Patrick Saulosi on Sunday confirmed that Gondwe was indeed on the law enforcers\u2019 wanted list.<\/p>\n
However, the police publicist said he needed more time to find out why Gondwe has not been arrested until now following a Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) complaint against the candidate.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Mzuzu High Court Judge Dingiswayo Madise on Thursday last week ordered Gondwe to forfeit the fake voter certificate he obtained for Mec to destroy it. The court also upheld Mec\u2019s decision to reject Gondwe\u2019s candidature in the by-election.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis means that PP will not have a candidate in the Local Government By-election [Chibanja Ward] slated for August 25 2015,\u201d said Mec Chief Elections Officer Willie Kalonga in a statement on Thursday last week.<\/p>\n
Currently, there are six candidates for the by-election from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Malawi Forum for Unity and Development (Mafunde), Umodz i Party, Alliance for Democracy (Aford) and an independent candidate.<\/p>\n
Asked how the party received the disqualification of the candidate, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda said on Sunday that his party upholds the Republican Constitution and respects pronouncements made by the courts.<\/p>\n
Msonda, however, said the party was still consulting its lawyers on the matter because failing to compete in the Chibanja Ward By-election was like giving the ward away since \u201cthe North is PP\u2019s bedroom\u201d.<\/p>\n
The PP publicist then faulted Mec on the incident, arguing that it was not surprising that the candidate\u2019s name was available at the centre but missing at its head office since some computers crashed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
