{"id":76026,"date":"2019-03-25T11:30:45","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T09:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=76026"},"modified":"2019-03-25T11:30:45","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T09:30:45","slug":"mcp-pp-confident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/03\/25\/mcp-pp-confident\/","title":{"rendered":"MCP, PP confident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Macdonald Thom:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera and his People\u2019s Party (PP) counterpart Joyce Banda Sunday said the two parties are capable of solving problems which the country is experiencing.<\/p>\n<p>Chakwera, who was endorsed to run for the State presidency by the former president, was speaking during a rally he addressed alongside Banda at Salima Primary School Ground.<\/p>\n<p>The MCP leader said it was sad that poverty levels were rising in the country, promising that, once voted into office, he would improve the situation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPeople are suffering. Poverty has reached crisis levels. There are challenges in all sectors,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chakwera also said it was sad that the country lost its citizens to an accident at Kampepuza in Ntcheu on Friday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAlong the main roads, there should be no markets. We should not change because some people have died,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chakwera said, under his leadership, Salima\u2019s importance as a hub of transportation in the country would be restored.<\/p>\n<p>He also said Malawi would benefit from his party\u2019s partnership with PP.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe need servant leadership. One of the people who can serve people in the rural areas well is Dr Joyce Banda. She will continue doing what she knows best,\u201d<\/em> Chakwera said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He encouraged all people to go and vote, declaring that the May 21 Tripartite Elections would not be rigged.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cNobody is going to rig these elections. No machine will work. Wherever you are going to plant them, they will fail. Malawians will not accept that,\u201d<\/em> Chakwera said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Banda said, out of the eight presidential candidates for the elections, Chakwera is the right person to lead the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhen it comes to serving Malawians, you have to make decision. A man of God should lead this country. I don\u2019t know how many men of God are contesting but I have chosen mine,\u201d<\/em> Banda said, reiterating her decision to support Chakwera in the elections.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was the duo\u2019s first appearance at a political rally, after holding a press conference together on Monday last week.<\/p>\n<p>Before the launch of the campaign, officials of the party had prayers in Lilongwe on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>And in his speech at the rally, Chakwera\u2019s running mate, Sidik Mia said the party would do a clean campaign.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe started the campaign with prayers. We want a clean campaign. We don\u2019t want to be removing other parties\u2019 flags. Let people who remove other candidates\u2019 flags continue. You can do that but you cannot remove what that person wants; what that person will vote for,\u201d<\/em> Mia said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mia pledged to support Chakwera in running the country\u2019s affairs once elected into office on May 21.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, PP vice president for the Central Region, Beatrice Mwale, underscored the importance of working together in the elections.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThere is strength in unity. We will campaign vigorously for our candidate. Malawians have suffered for a long time.
