I urge you all to do likewise, especially now as we handle what has befallen us,\u201d<\/em> Mutharika said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He appealed to well-wishers, including donor partners, to render support to the Malawi government in the aftermath of the disaster.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI had to curtail my trip up North in light of the same, I want to assure you that we stand with you [flood victims] in these difficult times,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mutharika symbolically handed out blankets and relief items to some of the victims, most of whom lost their property.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Thyolo, other districts that were affected include Chikwawa, Balaka, Blantyre and Ntcheu.<\/p>\n<p>Department of Disaster Management Affairs has put the figure of those who have died due to the disaster at 56.<\/p>\n<p>There were fears that another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2019\/03\/21\/mozambique-malawi-zimbabwe-braced-for-cyclone-idai\/\">cyclone, Idai<\/a>, which has devastated Zimbabwe and Mozambique\u2014particularly in Beira\u2014was on its way to Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Food and Agriculture Organisation has pointed out that the food security situation in the country could worsen, especially in the Southern Region, due to the floods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Stephen Dakalira: President Peter Mutharika has pledged the government\u2019s continued support to people who have been affected by floods that hit some parts of the country two weeks ago.
