{"id":75858,"date":"2019-03-21T10:34:30","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T08:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=75858"},"modified":"2019-03-21T10:34:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T08:34:30","slug":"african-capital-markets-in-steady-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/03\/21\/african-capital-markets-in-steady-development\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018African capital markets in steady development\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Sharon Chirwa:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75861\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/hari-chaitanya.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/hari-chaitanya-269x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/hari-chaitanya-269x300.jpg 269w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/hari-chaitanya.jpg 327w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CHAITANYA\u2014 The continent\u2019s markets are gaining a greater share<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>African largest bank by assets, Standard Bank Group, has said the continent saw a consistent improvement in capital markets in 2018 owing to multiple initiatives by countries.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Standard Bank Head of Investor Services Product Management, Transactional Products and Services, Hari Chaitanya, said the improvements were partly influenced by Malawi\u2019s launch of a depository and upgrading in Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cUpgrades in trading and settlement systems and the introduction of new instruments in a number of jurisdictions were matched by increasingly successful efforts at deepening the continent\u2019s domestic capital markets.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These improvements were supported by multiple initiatives towards sub-regional and regional integration,\u201d<\/em> reads part of the statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the statement, Chaitanya says improving liquidity, driving new listings and increasing intra-Africa investment rates will also improve global access to African opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>He said Africa\u2019s increasingly functional markets infrastructure is adding to domestic capital.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cBy also attracting more portfolio investment, the continent\u2019s markets are gaining a greater share of global frontier market flows,\u201d<\/em> Chaitanya added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Technology also seems to be making headway in the region, according to the bank.<\/p>\n<p>Chaitanya says sustaining capital market reform, expansion, technical development, innovation and integration will reduce Africa\u2019s challenges in accessing finance.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis will enable Africa to fund its economic growth by raising capital via increasingly efficient domestic markets that also attract and deploy regional and global investment,\u201d<\/em> Chaitanya adds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sharon Chirwa: African largest bank by assets, Standard Bank Group, has said the continent saw a consistent improvement in capital markets in 2018 owing to multiple initiatives by countries.
