He is now back in action at Ajax Cape Town in South Africa’s National First Division.

Mozambique-based goalkeeper Charles Swini and midfielder Frank Banda have also been axed but there is room for Banda’s younger brother John plus eSwatini-based in-form striker Binwell Katinji and South Africa’s BidVest Wits striker Gabadinho Mhango. Swini is reportedly ill.

RVG said he has excluded some players from the squad so that they should concentrate on the under-23 Afcon qualifying game against Zambia on March 20 in Blantyre and the return leg in Lusaka on March 26.

“The under-23 game against Zambia is being prioritised and that means the under-23 players who are included for senior games are not included this game against Morocco because they have to prepare for Zambia.

“At first, we wanted to shift the game against Zambia to Tuesday so that the players would also play against Morocco but, unfortunately, playing three games in six days is too much,” he said.

Senior team players who are with the under-23 are Precious Sambani, Levison Maganizo, Brighton Munthali, Denis Chembezi and Patrick Phiri who scored in Comoros last year.

The Flames regroup on Sunday evening ahead of the match against Morocco who lead the group with 10 points from five games, two points ahead of Cameroon, whereas Comoros and Malawi have five and four points respectively. Cameroon host Comoros also on Friday next week.

RVG’s assistant Peter Mponda said they dropped most of the senior players to accommodate other players.

“They [the seniors] are our reliable players but we thought it wise to try others who have been sidelined. We shall still need them in future but for now let us concentrate on the players that have been called into camp,” Mponda said.

Former Civil Sporting Club defender, Willy Cham’bwinja, said the changes would be meaningful if the Flames get a good result against Morocco.

“Anyway, it is a good development for RVG because some of these faces have been in the team for quite a long time and they did us proud.
