Ethno-musician Waliko Makhala, backed by Anthony Supriano, on Thursday stepped in for Lucky Stars Band which failed to make it to the Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre.<\/p>\n

Lucky Stars Band, led by Boniface Ndamera, were billed to perform at the session on Thursday but failed to make it at the eleventh hour.<\/p>\n

The organisers<\/a>, led by host Code Sangala, had to make sure that the event, which takes place every Thursday, was not cancelled, hence bringing in Waliko.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe nearly cancelled the event because Lucky Stars communicated at the eleventh hour that they would not make it. But people have got used to the session since we inaugurated it and so we had to do something. We would like to thank Waliko for stepping in at short notice,\u201d<\/em> Code said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He said they were happy with the response the session has received since they started.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince we started the sessions, have received overwhelming responses. The idea basically is to give sounds of Malawi the limelight. There are a lot of Western influences now; so, we would want our music to get that attention,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

JCC and Maison de la France Director, Luc Deschamps, said the session gives a chance to people to appreciate sounds from Malawi.<\/p>\n

During the session, Waliko, took the audience on a journey of his music and had time to tell folktales.<\/p>\n

Waliko kept people attentive throughout the show before going through a question-and-answer session.<\/p>\n

The musician dubs his music bush music, which is uncivilised.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been great performing to such a great audience which was eager to learn more. Again, it was a session where I shared, some folktales just to remind them of those good, old days when we used to listen to folktales from our grandparents. Today, because of technology, the story is different. Parents have no time to tell folktales to their children and yet this is part of our culture. We need to embrace this otherwise our children will not have an idea of these folktales,\u201d<\/em> Waliko said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Since its inception, Sounds of Malawi Acoustic session has hosted artists such as Agorosso, Goma Nyondo, Chichiri Heritage Entertainment and veteran Snowden Ibbu.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Deschamps has said artists that have performed so far will share the stage in the next session.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make it interesting for the audience and we will try as much as possible to bring in surprises. As I indicated last time, we are trying to plan a festival on the same,\u201d<\/em> Deschamps said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
