The ball has been thrown in the court of former Silver Strikers forward, Chawanangwa Kawonga, to up his game at Mozambican football club, Chibuto, if he is to earn a long-term contract at Portuguese second division side, FC Tirsense.<\/p>\n
Kawonga is a visa away from securing a dream one-year contract at FC Tirsense, but Chibuto chairperson, Junaide Largy, says the former Silver star has to lay a strong foundation in the Mozambique league.<\/p>\n
Kawonga’s Silver Strikers young team mate, Jimmy Ukonde, has rejoined Chibuto after failing to make the grade at another Portuguese outfit, hence the Chibuto boss’s advice.<\/p>\n
Kawonga too would return to Chibuto if he does not impress in Europe. Chibuto has sister relationships with Portuguese teams.<\/p>\n
Last week, the former Malawi Under-20 striker insisted that his lack of enough goals was a reflection of Chibuto’s struggles. He has eight league goals.<\/p>\n
“I was not being featured regularly. Maybe I can do better if I change teams. It is difficult for one player to do well when the whole team is struggling,” Kawonga insisted.<\/p>\n
Silver, who sold the striker to Chibuto at around K6.5 million last season, stand to get a 15 percent cut if Kawonga transfers to the Portuguese side, the Bankers acting general secretary Fred Kawonga confirmed.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was supposed to go to Portugal in June, but Chibuto could not release him as they were struggling in the Mozambique league,\u201d Kalonga said.<\/p>\n
Kawonga was a key member of the then Ernest Mtawali-led Malawi Under-20 side that was two games away from securing Africa Youth Championship qualification only to lose 4-0 to their Zambian counterparts over two legs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
