{"id":74903,"date":"2019-02-26T03:32:29","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T01:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=74903"},"modified":"2019-02-26T03:32:29","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T01:32:29","slug":"ngo-backs-apam-vigil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/02\/26\/ngo-backs-apam-vigil\/","title":{"rendered":"NGO backs Apam vigil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Jameson Chauluka: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NGO Gender Coordination Network Chairperson, Barbara Banda, has said they have thrown their weight behind a vigil which Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (Apam) has organised from March 6 to 8, in protest against continued cases of killing of people with albinism.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe want to say \u2018enough is enough\u2019. Even one life lost is enough to warrant the vigil. We don\u2019t want to believe that more people have to die before we act. In fact, Minister of Homeland Security Honourable Nicholas Dausi\u2019s remarks that the cases of murder have not reached a critical level to warrant the vigil are reckless and irresponsible,\u201d<\/em> she said when addressing the press in Blantyre Monday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Banda said they are dismayed by the death in police custody of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/apam-wants-postmortem\/\">Lule Buleya,<\/a> a key suspect in the murder of a 14-year-old boy with albinism, Goodson Makanjira, as they hoped the suspect could have revealed the market for body tissues of persons with albinism.<\/p>\n<p>About 25 people with albinism have been murdered while 10 others are missing since the resurgence of the murders of people with albinism, 80 percent of whom are children.<\/p>\n<p>The network\u2019s Child Rights Permanent Committee Chairperson, Alice Bwanausi, said most children with albinism have dropped out of school in fear of their lives<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jameson Chauluka: NGO Gender Coordination Network Chairperson, Barbara Banda, has said they have thrown their weight behind a vigil which Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (Apam) has organised from March 6 to 8, in protest against continued cases of killing of people with albinism. \u201cWe want to say \u2018enough is enough\u2019.
