{"id":74770,"date":"2019-02-22T11:43:08","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T09:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=74770"},"modified":"2019-02-22T11:43:08","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T09:43:08","slug":"mcc-veep-in-next-week-to-discuss-new-compact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/02\/22\/mcc-veep-in-next-week-to-discuss-new-compact\/","title":{"rendered":"MCC veep in next week to discuss new compact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Taonga Sabola <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/goodall-gondwe-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-72267\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/goodall-gondwe-2-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/goodall-gondwe-2-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/goodall-gondwe-2-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/goodall-gondwe-2.jpg 459w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcc.gov\/about\/profile\/bio-hauch-jeanne\">Jeanne Hauch<\/a>, jets into the country next week to hold talks with Capital Hill on a new compact for Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>The United States Embassy says in a statement Hauch will jet into the country on Wednesday and will be in the country up to March 1.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi was selected by MCC\u2019s Board of Directors as eligible to develop a compact in December 2018 after successfully completing its first five-year compact, which was focused on the energy sector.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cDuring the visit, Vice President Hauch and her team will meet with government officials, civil society, and the private sector, among others,\u201d<\/em> reads the statement in part.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the second time in five months that the MCC veep has visited Malawi. Hauch, who is responsible for providing counsel to MCC\u2019s Board of Directors and senior management on a range of legal and policy matters, was in the country late October during the official handover and commissioning of upgraded Nkula A Hydropower Plant in Neno District.<\/p>\n<p>Hauch said MCA is committed to developing Malawi in the energy sector for the country\u2019s economic growth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhen we came, we asked ourselves what was holding back the economic growth of Malawi. We noted that Malawi has no access to reliable electricity. That is why we thought of seriously investing in energy, thus refurbishment of Nkula A,\u201d<\/em> Hauch said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finance Minister, Goodall Gondwe, in December hinted that the government could target other areas than energy in the next compact.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOn the power generation, we seem to be okay now. Maybe we could go to another aspect of infrastructure.
