Farmers also harvest more from a small area.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are also encouraging farmers to diversify as a contingency measure,\u201d<\/em> Maigwa said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Blantyre Agricultural Development Division Programme Manager, Eric Haramani, encouraged farmers to avoid mixing tobacco with trash.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOur tobacco in Malawi is very reputable worldwide and we would like to jealously guard this reputation,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the farmers, Amos Makina, said he had benefitted from the use of improved varieties of tobacco.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI now harvest more tobacco leaves than before,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The field day also served as the launch of 143 tobacco farming field days which Aret plans to hold across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jacqueline Ndindi: Tobacco farmers have been encouraged to adopt advanced technologies to shore up production.
