{"id":74270,"date":"2019-02-11T11:13:52","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T09:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=74270"},"modified":"2019-02-11T11:13:52","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T09:13:52","slug":"illovo-profit-hits-k16-4-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/02\/11\/illovo-profit-hits-k16-4-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Illovo profit hits K16.4 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Florence Magowa: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74273\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/illovo-sugar-plantation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74273\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/illovo-sugar-plantation-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/illovo-sugar-plantation-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/illovo-sugar-plantation-768x342.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/illovo-sugar-plantation.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ROBUST\u2014 Sugar production at Nchalo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Illovo Sugar Malawi recorded a K16.4 billion profit in the year-ended August 31 2018, up from K7 billion registered in 2017, the firm said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Briefing investors in Chikwawa, the firm said, having produced 230,020 million tonnes of sugar last year, the company\u2019s revenue rose to K141.8 billion from K124, 035 billion in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Illovo Sugar Malawi Finance Director, Edward Namboya, said the company\u2019s directors resolved to invest the profits in repaying its loans.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe understand our shareholders\u2019 frustrations but we also want to assure them that, should there be any progress, we will let them know.\u201d<\/em> Namboya said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said power shortages, adverse weather conditions and pests and diseases were some of the challenges the company faced in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Namboya assured shareholders that more cost efficient measures have been taken to resolve the challenges stated.<\/p>\n<p>One of the minority shareholders, Frank Harawa, said their biggest problem with Illovo Malawi has been the outstanding debt which has affected dividend payment.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis has been our cry.
