{"id":7417,"date":"2015-08-12T08:42:34","date_gmt":"2015-08-12T08:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=7417"},"modified":"2015-08-12T08:42:34","modified_gmt":"2015-08-12T08:42:34","slug":"uk-pledges-continued-scholarships-to-malawians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/08\/12\/uk-pledges-continued-scholarships-to-malawians\/","title":{"rendered":"UK pledges continued scholarships to Malawians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Britain says it will continue offering a wide range of opportunities for career advancement to deserving Malawians, as one way of contributing to Malawi\u2019s growth and development.<\/p>\n<p>British High Commissioner to Malawi Michael Nevin said this as the UK government announced, in a statement, the opening of the 2016\/17 Chevening Scholarship competition.<\/p>\n<p>Chevening Scholarships are a UK government\u2019s global scholarship programme, awarded to individuals with strong academic backgrounds who also have demonstrated leadership potential.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship offers financial support to study for a Master\u2019s degree at any of the UK\u2019s leading universities and the opportunity to become part of an influential global network of 44,000 alumni.<\/p>\n<p>The call for new applicants follows selection of 12 scholars from Malawi, who won an award to study at a UK university commencing this year.<\/p>\n<p>Nevin said apart from helping to build bridges between Malawi and the UK, the Chevening Scholarship programme empowers scholars with a sense of pride, responsibility and confidence, helping in many cases to fast-track careers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompetition is tough but the rewards high. We offer a unique opportunity for Malawians to gain UK academic experience while broadening their global and social outlooks in the UK,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He urged qualified Malawians in all fields and industries to take advantage of the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK\u2019s Chevening Scholarship programme looks for Malawians with drive and ability and who have the potential to make a real leadership difference. We want applicants who will go on to lead reform and innovation for the benefit of Malawi and for global progress,\u201d Nevin said.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, Chevening Secretariat Director, Michael Scott-Kline stressed the need to embrace the learning opportunity that Chevening brings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only do award recipients receive a first-rate UK education, they join a vibrant community of Chevening alumni, Foreign and Commonwealth Office staff, UK universities, and partner organisations. Chevening award recipients will draw on and contribute to this community for the rest of their lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chevening began in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international awards scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Scholars come from over 160 countries and territories worldwide (excluding the USA and the EU), and over 1,500 scholarships were awarded in 2015\/2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Britain says it will continue offering a wide range of opportunities for career advancement to deserving Malawians, as one way of contributing to Malawi\u2019s growth and development.
