{"id":74096,"date":"2019-02-06T10:26:23","date_gmt":"2019-02-06T08:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=74096"},"modified":"2019-02-06T10:26:23","modified_gmt":"2019-02-06T08:26:23","slug":"malawi-prepares-soldiers-for-drc-peacekeeping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/02\/06\/malawi-prepares-soldiers-for-drc-peacekeeping\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi prepares soldiers for DRC peacekeeping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Peter Kanjere: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malawi Defence Force (MDF) will send the next contingent of soldiers to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on a United Nations-sanctioned peace-keeping mission in August 2019, army spokesperson, Paul Chiphwanya, confirmed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In view of the DRC assignment, three British Army instructors are drilling their 30 counterparts at the Malawi Armed Forces College in Salima District, Chiphwanya said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is a trainer-of-trainers\u2019 exercise that takes place when there is a requirement. After the training, we expect that they will impart the knowledge in the next contingent of soldiers that will go to the DRC in August,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The course will run for two weeks and comes three months after six Malawian soldiers died on duty in the DRC while on peace-keeping mission.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/4-malawian-soldiers-missing-in-drc\/\">Two soldiers<\/a> for Malawi are still missing after being attacked by rebels in North Kivu. Chiphwanya refused to comment on the missing soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>British Army\u2019s Captain, Thomas Straken, told Malawi News Agency that the training would help prevent a recurrence of the DRC incident.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe believe the training will equip the soldiers with techniques to prevent what happened previously in DRC when MDF lost some of its soldiers on a peace-keeping mission,\u201d<\/em> Straken told the press in Salima.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The United States and British government are MDF partners in training programmes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Peter Kanjere: Malawi Defence Force (MDF) will send the next contingent of soldiers to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on a United Nations-sanctioned peace-keeping mission in August 2019, army spokesperson, Paul Chiphwanya, confirmed on Monday.
