{"id":74034,"date":"2019-02-05T10:19:33","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T08:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=74034"},"modified":"2019-02-05T10:19:33","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T08:19:33","slug":"malawi-sports-awards-nominees-under-scrutiny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/02\/05\/malawi-sports-awards-nominees-under-scrutiny\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi Sports Awards nominees under scrutiny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Mphatso Malidadi: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74037\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74037\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/malawi-sports-awards.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74037\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/malawi-sports-awards-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/malawi-sports-awards-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/malawi-sports-awards.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SET FOR FEBRUARY 22\u2014Malawi Sports Awards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over 100 athletes and officials have been nominated for this year\u2019s Malawi Sports Awards ceremony scheduled for Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe on February 22.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi National Council of Sports Administration Manager, Henry Mereka, said they have embarked on a vetting process to trim the number of nominations to accommodate only the outstanding ones.<\/p>\n<p>Mereka said the vetting process was crucial and committees were determined to select the best.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAfter the submission of nominees from associations and a group of selected sports journalists, our committees have started scrutinising the nominations to check whether they deserve to be recognised for their achievements locally and internationally,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners will compete with their foreign counterparts at regional level later in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Mereka said the awards were critical to the aim of professionalising the sport in practice and management in the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cBesides being an encouragement to athletes and administrators, the awards are also intended to present an exclusive platform for advertising and marketing to any partnering sponsor,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The awards will be in the categories of junior female sportsperson, junior male sportsperson, sports administrator, non-citizen, national team of the year, sports woman of the year, sportsman, coach, referee and district of the year, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Sports Council introduced the awards last year when referee Bernadette Kwimbira Nzika emerged the overall winner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mphatso Malidadi: Over 100 athletes and officials have been nominated for this year\u2019s Malawi Sports Awards ceremony scheduled for Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe on February 22.
