{"id":74018,"date":"2019-02-05T03:05:14","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T01:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=74018"},"modified":"2019-02-05T03:05:14","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T01:05:14","slug":"shepherd-bushiri-remanded-until-wednesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/02\/05\/shepherd-bushiri-remanded-until-wednesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Shepherd Bushiri remanded until Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Peter Kanjere: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shepherd Bushiri, South Africa-based Malawian leader of Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church, will remain in custody until Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><em>BBC Radio <\/em>and <em>Sowetan <\/em>newspaper of South Africa reported Monday that Bushiri and his wife Mary, who were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/shepherd-bushiri-arrested-over-money-laundering\/\">arrested<\/a> on Friday on suspicion of fraud and money-laundering offences, appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper reports that Bushiri\u2019s supporters flooded Visage Street ahead of his court appearance, demanding his release.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, The Hawks Monday slammed claims that they had a personal vendetta against Bushiri.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPeople will always talk. Let them talk because we are here to work and that is our duty\u201a\u201c police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, is quoted as saying.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe don\u2019t look at who we are investigating and the state of the person. If you start doing that\u201a you are making a mistake.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said they <a href=\"https:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2019\/02\/01\/pastor-shepherd-bushiri-arrested-for-fraud-and-money-laundering\">arrested Bushiri<\/a> and his wife at a hotel in Rustenburg on fraud and money laundering charges involving more than R15 million.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe Hawks\u2019 case against the pair concerns alleged offences of fraud\u201a money laundering and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA).
