Liwonde National Park rangers have apprehended a poacher and confiscated a rifle and eight rounds of ammunition which they say the culprit wanted to use on a mission to kill elephants at Masanje area in the park.<\/p>\n
Liwonde National Park Manager Alick Makanjra confirmed the apprehension of Kadyenera Pofera.<\/p>\n
Pofera who comes from Mpasuka Village, Traditional Authority Kawinga in Machinga claimed he borrowed the rifle from a policeman at Malombe in Mangochi.<\/p>\n
Elephants are among the big five animals in the park whose population is about 700.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, Liwonde National Park is investigating the issue.<\/p>\n
Recently Liwonde National Park destroyed a heap of wire snares and gin traps which poachers had been setting to kill animals including elephants.<\/p>\n
Wild life organisation, Operations Safe Haven, is implementing a project in the park aimed at protecting wild life and training game rangers to deal with poaching.<\/p>\n
In June, game rangers at the park shot 27-year old Julio Ernest after found him in a rhino sanctuary armed with a panga knife and an arrow.<\/p>\n
Ernest threw an arrow at the rangers prompting them to shoot him on the left leg.<\/p>\n
