Malawi Volunteers Organisation (MVO) has challenged government and other key stakeholders promoting children welfare to focus on instilling a culture of patriotism among the country\u2019s youths which can help them take part in social work and national services.<\/p>\n
MVO executive director Francis Njanje made the remarks in Mangochi on Saturday when volunteers from United States of America (USA) and Britain joined school going children and other Malawians in a cleaning exercise within Monkey Bay Township.<\/p>\n
Njanje said for a long time Malawi has been struggling with lack of patriotism among its citizens due to what he said poor upbringing of children.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut this can be a thing of the past if children are taught to do the right thing whilst they are still young. We have seen it working in other countries in such as way that when it comes to social work and national services, everybody takes part without complaining, which is in sharp contrast to the situation in Malawi,\u201d said Njanje.<\/p>\n
Volunteers from across the world, most of them youths, have been coming to Malawi to work in various sectors, and Njanje wants Malawi to emulate that spirit and start contributing something tangible at the global level.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, we have to first of all show that we can do it here at home before crossing borders. This can be possible if the country\u2019s youths are nurtured to appreciate the spirit of volunteerism,\u201d Njanje said.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, one of the volunteers from United Kingdom Paul Wilson said issues of national service go hand in hand with a spirit of patriotism.<\/p>\n
He said engaging children when they are still young can help the country to have citizens who are disciplined and dedicated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
