{"id":73880,"date":"2019-01-31T12:32:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T10:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=73880"},"modified":"2019-01-31T12:32:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T10:32:00","slug":"lazarus-chakwera-first-in-nomination-papers-presentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2019\/01\/31\/lazarus-chakwera-first-in-nomination-papers-presentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Lazarus Chakwera first in nomination papers presentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Peter Kanjere:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/peter-mutharika2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-56152\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/peter-mutharika2-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/peter-mutharika2-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/peter-mutharika2-768x342.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/peter-mutharika2.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Malawi Congress Party leader Lazarus Chakwera and President Peter Mutharika will be the first and one but last, respectively, to present their nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) next week, ahead of the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.<\/p>\n<p>Chakwera will, on Monday, open the floor in presenting nomination forms at Chichiri International Conference Centre, commonly known as Comesa Hall, in Blantyre, Mec Chief Elections Officer, Sam Alfandika, announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe commission has put in place security measures to ensure the safety of the candidates and their supporters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHowever, candidates and their supporters are also encouraged to maintain peace and order and avoid provocative actions in the event that they meet with counterparts at the presentation venues,\u201d<\/em> Alfandika says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chakwera will submit his paper at 9am, followed by John Chisi of Umodzi Party at 11am, independent Florence Fulayi (1pm) then Cassim Chilumpha (Tikonze Peoples Party) at 2pm.<\/p>\n<p>The following day, it would be the turn of Peter Kuwani (Mbakuwaku Movement for Development), Enock Chihana (Alliance for Democracy), Rhodrick Makhambera (independent), People\u2019s Party\u2019s Joyce Banda and Chris Bulachano (Democratic Federal Alliance).<\/p>\n<p>The schedule further shows that Vice-President and UTM leader, Saulos Chilima, will lead the nominations for Wednesday, followed by Chris Daza (Democratic People\u2019s Congress), Sally Kumwenda (Leadership with Compassion) and Ras Chikomeni Chirwa (independent).<\/p>\n<p>United Democratic Front\u2019s Atupele Muluzi is a high-profile name to present nomination papers on Thursday when independent Baxter Natulu will open the nominations\u2019 floor.<\/p>\n<p>Other presidential candidates to submit papers on Thursday are Loudon Malingamoyo Phiri (National Salvation Front), Khumbo Kachali (Freedom Party) and Henry Mdebwe (independent).<\/p>\n<p>Mutharika will be the one but last candidate to submit his form on Friday at 2pm.<\/p>\n<p>Smart Swira (independent), Chimbuna Belekiah (United Independence Party), Damiano Ganiza (independent) and Hadwick Kaliya (independent) are other presidential hopefuls to take their turns on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>There are 23 aspiring presidential candidates but the number might change as it is subject to the aspirants meeting criteria such as paying nomination fees of K2 million each.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Peter Kanjere: Malawi Congress Party leader Lazarus Chakwera and President Peter Mutharika will be the first and one but last, respectively, to present their nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) next week, ahead of the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.
