In fact no African film made the semi-final list of nine films from which the final five have been nominated,\u201d<\/em> Joyah said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A committee selected Joyah\u2019s film which also received seven nominations in the 2018 Africa Movie Academy Awards <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/shemu-joyah-shares-amaa-experiences\/\">(Amaa)<\/a> before being submitted to the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran filmmaker, who has also produced other award winning films such as <em>Seasons of a Life <\/em>and <em>The Last Fishing Boat<\/em>, said the country needs to embrace the Oscars to be part of the international stage.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy Awards , also known as the Oscars, are a set of 24 awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry, given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , to recognise excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy\u2019s voting membership.<\/p>\n<p>The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, although more commonly referred to by its nickname Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>The award was originally sculpted by George Stanley from a design sketch by Cedric Gibbons.<\/p>\n<p>The 91st Academy Awards ceremony, honouring the best films of 2018, will be held on 24 February 24 2019, at the Dolby Theatre, in Los Angeles, California, United States of America.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the films that have received more nominations include Black Panther.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sam Banda Jnr: Filmmaker Shemu Joyah\u2019s film The Road to Sunrise, which was submitted to the Oscar\u2019s, has failed to get a nomination.
