FLASHBACK\u2014Waya in Flames camp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Malawi football legend, Lawrence Waya, has given a candid analysis of his stint with the Flames late last year, where the team has improved and areas that need fine-tuning.<\/p>\n

It was the first time that Waya spoke about his latest coaching stint with the Flames.<\/p>\n

Waya, who Flames Coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG) engaged to help drill strikers,<\/a> described his two weeks with the team as worth it, despite that the Flames are still struggling to score.<\/p>\n

The Flames have scored six goals in 19 games of all competitions under RVG\u2019s two-year tenure, which winds up in April 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the time was short and I am sure that, given a lot of time, we will definitely improve the players. It was a nice experience and I am looking forward to more sessions, as there is a lot we can share to help improve our game,\u201d<\/em> he said from his base in South Africa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Waya said the Flames are able to control possession and play from the back, but need to be more direct in the attacking third.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy observation was that the team is now very good in ball possession. We do very well from the back to midfield.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is needed now is the transition to have the same good possession in the attacking third and have few passes to speed up play in attacking the goal.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIn most instances, they reach the attacking third then start passing the ball back and reach at the back, which makes [the team] to start from square one,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He said it was important for the team to balance playing well with attacking he opponent\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis can be measured by how many shots were taken at goal, crosses, through-balls and corner kicks. The way forward for our team is to make sure that we score in each and every game\u2014win or lose\u2014 as this would show that we are attacking.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Waya, who is a qualified football administrator and coach, is the Flames second all-time leading scorer behind Kinnah Phiri. Both played for Nyasa Big Bullets, then Bata Bullets.<\/p>\n

RVG also engaged Be Forward Wanderers\u2019 veteran striker Esau Kanyenda and his coach Bob Mpinganjira, a former top striker in his heydays, to help drill the strikers for the Flames.<\/p>\n

However, it was rather too little, too late as the Flames bowed out of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying race after posting three defeats, one draw and one win.<\/p>\n
