Four people died when a motor vehicle they were travelling in on their way to attend John Chilembwe Day commemorations in Chiradzulu District overturned Tuesday.<\/p>\n
In his speech during the commemorations, President Peter Mutharika said he had received reports that there were 45 people in the vehicle and that eight had been rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
Mutharika described the accident as unfortunate and asked the Chief Secretary to the Government to ensure that families of the victims are assisted.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is very sad. My condolences to the government and I ask the Chief Secretary to do all you can to assist the bereaved families,\u201d<\/em> he said<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Commenting on the contribution of Reverend John Chilembwe to the country\u2019s freedom, Mutharika said he laid Malawi\u2019s foundation.<\/p>\n
Mutharika described Chilembwe as a spiritual, political and national leader who had a vision for Malawi, encouraging Malawians to love their country.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we need is to love our country. What we need is to work hard and love one another. These are great lessons we learn from nations that have risen to greatness. These are the lessons we learn from the life of Reverend John Chilembwe. I am always delighted to celebrate the life of John Chilembwe,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Mutharika said Chilembwe was a selfless leader who gave his all for the benefit of the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cChilembwe wanted people to be industrious and he wanted this country to be industrious and that is why I am happy that, in the past year, we have established Ida Chilembwe Technical College to fulfill Chilembwe\u2019s dream some 100 years ago,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Before attending the memorial service, Mutharika laid a wreath on Chilembwe Memorial Tower.<\/p>\n
Chilembwe championed the uprising against colonial rule.<\/p>\n
