{"id":7258,"date":"2015-08-10T09:15:14","date_gmt":"2015-08-10T09:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=7258"},"modified":"2015-08-10T09:15:14","modified_gmt":"2015-08-10T09:15:14","slug":"mcp-veteran-gets-no-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/08\/10\/mcp-veteran-gets-no-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"MCP veteran gets no vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In what can easily be described as an emphatic vote of no confidence, none of the 421 delegates to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) central region elections voted for veteran politician and regional chairman Daniel Mlomo, embarrassingly booting him out of office at an emotive election held at the party\u2019s headquarters, last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Mlomo, who was not present at the party\u2019s headquarters, has been regional chairman since 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The delegates instead elected Dedza North Member of Parliament Patrick Chilondola as their new regional chairman.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eliah Kamphinda Banda, one of the officials handling the elections, Chilondola amassed 191 votes while his closest contender, Dyson Kamphambe got 153 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Lyton Dzombe got 53 votes while Mchinji North East legislator Alex Chitete had 19. Mlomo was the only contender who got no vote.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Ching\u2019ani was elected first deputy regional chairman while Langton Nkhosa Kamwendo was elected second deputy regional chairman.<\/p>\n<p>Having failed to win the race for regional chairmanship, Kamphambe retained his position as regional secretary. Lilongwe South MP Peter Dimba was elected treasurer.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Kalebe was elected regional chairperson for women while Godwin Mseka became director of youth.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable people who got positions in the elections are former Lilongwe City Centre MP Shadreck Jonas (second deputy publicity secretary), Jolly Kalelo (first deputy regional secretary) and former deputy Speaker of Parliament Lillian Kapanda (first deputy regional chairperson for women).<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the elections, it was reported that Mlomo had obtained an injunction stopping the party from holding the elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, both director of elections Maxwell Thyolera and publicity secretary Jessie Kabwila said the party was not served with the injunction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMCP has not been served with that injunction, that\u2019s why we have gone ahead with the election. You could even see that all delegates were ready for the elections,\u201d Kabwila said.<\/p>\n<p>On his part, Chilondola, who was Mlomo\u2019s deputy, pledged to make the party strong in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was second in command, but at times it was not easy to implement my ideas without being authorised by my regional chairman. I used to respect him. I have to start implementing my ideas. I want our president to concentrate on strengthening the party in other regions.
