{"id":72535,"date":"2018-12-26T11:04:42","date_gmt":"2018-12-26T09:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=72535"},"modified":"2018-12-26T11:04:42","modified_gmt":"2018-12-26T09:04:42","slug":"no-solution-to-malawi-college-of-health-sciences-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/12\/26\/no-solution-to-malawi-college-of-health-sciences-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"No solution to Malawi College of Health Sciences strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Audrey Kapalamula:<\/p>\n<p>Students at Malawi College of Health Sciences (MCHS) will have to wait longer before they resume learning as Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has refused to toe the students\u2019 line.<\/p>\n<p>The students have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/malawi-college-of-health-sciences-students-storm-opc\/\">pressuring<\/a> the OPC to fast-track the reopening of the college which was closed due to an industrial strike by the college\u2019s staff who were demanding a pay rise as well as to be put on pension cover.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the petition the students presented to OPC on October 26 2018, Principal Secretary in the OPC Cliff Chiunda said the students should be calm as concerned parties are working on resolving the issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI was following the events with keen interest [sic] concerning reasons leading to the strike. I would like to inform you that my office was in constant touch with the Ministry of Health in order to resolve the issue,\u201d<\/em> reads part of the letter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The college has been closed for two months following the staff strike.<\/p>\n<p>The closure of the college forced students to seek OPC\u2019s intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Chiunda said the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/deadlock-in-malawi-college-of-health-sciences-strike\/\">strike<\/a> by the employees was legal and that the demand by the striking employees required the involvement of other stakeholders such as board members.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI am glad to inform you that there are positive developments to resolve the issue. In this vein, I would like to ask all students unions of Malawi College of Health Sciences to remain calm and peaceful so that issues should be concluded with sober minds,\u201d<\/em> he said<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>President of the college\u2019s students\u2019 union Ison Bond, in an interview Tuesday said they are not satisfied with the response.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe are not satisfied with the response.
