{"id":72280,"date":"2018-11-30T09:30:33","date_gmt":"2018-11-30T07:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=72280"},"modified":"2018-11-30T09:30:33","modified_gmt":"2018-11-30T07:30:33","slug":"experts-upbeat-on-dropout-rate-reduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/11\/30\/experts-upbeat-on-dropout-rate-reduction\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts upbeat on dropout rate reduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Feston Malekezo: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/school-girls.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-33763\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/school-girls-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/school-girls-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/school-girls.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Education experts in Mzimba are optimistic that education standards would improve in the district following interventions different organisations have lined up.<\/p>\n<p>The district is struggling with school dropout rate.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the handover of a girls\u2019 hostel and a matron\u2019s house valued at K32 million on Wednesday, students at Kanjuchi Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) could not hide the fact that they were encountering a number of challenges along the way.<\/p>\n<p>ActionAid, through community-based organisation called Tideco, started constructing the 40-bed-hostel and house in 2016.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThese facilities will give us the opportunity to stay closer to the school,\u201d<\/em> said a form three student Sharon Luhanga.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kanjuchi CDSS is the only secondary school in Kanjuchi Education Zone and has 14 feeder primary schools.<\/p>\n<p>Tideco Director, Angels Manda, said the idea to construct the hostel was hatched after noting that a lot of girls were dropping out of school.<\/p>\n<p>He said, during the 2016\/17 academic year, nine girls dropped out of school due to reasons such as lack of interest, early marriages and pregnancy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhile we are assured of maximum security, we are also convinced of star performances among students, especially the girls,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>ActionAid Programmes Manager for Mzimba District, Wongani Mgawa, urged stakeholders to join hands to promote education goals.<\/p>\n<p>Mzimba District Commissioner, Thomas Chirwa, who graced the event, said there are plans to construct more hostels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Feston Malekezo: Education experts in Mzimba are optimistic that education standards would improve in the district following interventions different organisations have lined up.
